Overview
The purpose of this activity is to educate healthcare providers on Cultural Competence, update attendees on current research and findings on Health disparities as they relate to cultural barriers and discuss ways to minimize or eliminate these barriers to provide culturally sensitive care and increase patient satisfaction and wellbeing. The agenda focuses on current challenges and highlights recent changes and guidelines that are making a difference. Participants will leave with a wealth of knowledge on how to identify cultural barriers in communication, how to ask appropriate questions to learn how to face these barriers, how to apply cultural sensitivity, and how to properly apply the patient’s cultural values to western medicine to promote patient compliance with their care plans.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Recognize what cultural competency is and apply best practices to caregiver's work and practice.
  2. Analyze personal communication barriers and unconscious bias affecting caregiver's ability to provide personalized care to people from different cultural backgrounds.
  3. Examine when cultural differences create a barrier in providing effective and safe healthcare.
  4. Use qualified interpreters and other available resources.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Nurses will self-report an increase in their knowledge regarding how to implement evidence based practice into their daily practice.
  2. Nurses will self-report one change they will make to their practice or performance as a result of this educational activity.
