Palliative Care Primary Nurses Onboarding

Palliative Care Primary Nursing (PCPN) looks for interested NICU RNs to become Palliative Care Primary Nurses. This means these nurses are specially trained in how to succeed during hard conversations, learn about resiliency in caring for patients with complex diagnoses, setting excellent boundaries with families, and mastering the ins and outs of what palliative care provides for families. Then, these nurses join a pool of nurses who frequently take on NICU patients on the Palliative Care team as their primary patient. There will be presentations on: 1) Palliative care what is it? What is hospice? What is the difference? What does Rainbow kids do? 2) Intro to primary care palliative nursing (PCPN) and the primary nursing role versus the rainbow kids palliative care role, 3) NICU End of Life overview, 4) Boundaries and Self Care, Vital Talk Principles-roleplay and difficult communication skills 5) Pain and sedation overview/management, and 6) Self Care and the stress continuum.

1. Learners will self-report an increase in knowledge and proficiency to implement end of life care. (Knowledge)
2. Learners will self-report greater expertise and ability to initiate compassionate communication. (Knowledge)

Nursing Contact Hours

Intermountain Health is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This live activity offers a maximum of 5.25 contact hours of nursing continuing professional development. Successful completion is attending no less than 1 full session and claiming credit only for sessions attended. Credit is awarded upon completion of a conference feedback survey. Commercial support has not been received for this event.
