Overview
Join healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders for a vital one-day conference focused on perinatal substance use and its profound impact on maternal and infant health. With unintentional overdose as the second leading cause of maternal mortality in Colorado, this event will center on emerging research, best practices, and systems-level quality improvement aimed at enhancing patient safety and health outcomes across the perinatal continuum. Keynotes and plenaries will explore critical issues, including respectful care and discrimination in perinatal substance use, breastfeeding in the context of cannabis and alcohol use, and provider compassion fatigue. Attendees will also gain insights into Colorado SB 24-175, intimate partner violence, and legal considerations such as child protective services involvement and patient rights. Interactive components like a Healthcare Team Readiness Drill on Overdose and Naloxone, a QI Escape Room for hands-on hospital team practice, and sessions on Plans of Safe Care implementation and harm reduction strategies will provide actionable tools for immediate integration into clinical settings. Breakouts on pain management, top treatment recommendations, and safe use and safe sleep further support a dyad-focused, compassionate approach. Network with peers, engage in real-world problem solving, and be part of a growing movement to transform care for pregnant and postpartum individuals impacted by substance use.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Implement cutting-edge research and evidence-based best practices for the substance exposed dyad.
  2. Discuss strategies for systems-level quality improvement to improve outcomes for the substance exposed dyad.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Participants will self-report increased comprehension about how stigma and discrimination negatively impact clinical outcomes for families experiencing perinatal substance use.
  2. Participants will self-report increased ability in counseling techniques that support informed decision-making in breastfeeding for parents who use substances.
  3. Participants will self-report an increased awareness of how their own well-being directly influences the quality of patient care and outcomes.
  4. Participants will self-report the increased ability to solve patient challenges and implement evidence-informed changes within their teams.
