Overview
Providers will learn basics of sexual and gender minority stress theories, and the research supporting incorporating this emphasis into psychotherapy across diagnostic categories. Techniques taught will draw from contextual behavioral approaches such as acceptance and commitment therapy and functional analytic psychotherapy, which are effective comparably to other forms of CBT. Session will include some didactics, though include a variety of experiential exercises that may require some self-disclosure on the part of participants. Didactic lectures will introduce the core empirical support for minority stress theory, as well as the basic principles of process-based contextual behavior therapies. Experiential work will be intended to evoke and illuminate personal patterns of discomfort or experiential avoidance on the part of clinicians related to sexual orientation and gender identity. There will be opportunities to incorporate practice into this work, and many self-oriented tasks used within the workshop are appropriate to use as tools in therapy. The primary possible risk lies in any distress that considering one’s sexual orientation or gender identity might lead to, particularly for those individuals uncomfortable with the topics. In some cases participants might receive an offer not to take part, or to choose less personally relevant material, though to do so may limit the utility of this training.

Objectives
  1. Describe the central components of minority stress theory
  2. Identify the impact of rejection sensitivity on interpersonal relationships
  3. Respond effectively to contingent self-worth
  4. Identify unique aspects of gender minority stress
  5. Incorporate minority stress processes into a treatment plan
