PEM POCUS Bootcamp 2026

PEM POCUS Bootcamp: An educational course designed to introduce, reinforce, and refresh core point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) knowledge and skills for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) providers, fellows, residents, medical students, PEM nurses, and other learners affiliated with the PEM division. Although the curriculum is focused on PEM applications, the material is broadly applicable to healthcare providers caring for pediatric or adult patients who are interested in developing foundational POCUS competency. The program agenda will include PEM POCUS Literature in Brief, POCUS 101 and machine operation basics, ultrasound physics, EFAST, focused cardiac ultrasound fundamentals, soft tissue ultrasound, foreign body evaluation, and ultrasound-guided IV access basics. Participants will also have dedicated hands-on scanning sessions with live models to practice and reinforce all covered applications and techniques. Completion of the online content is highly encouraged to maximize the educational experience and hands-on learning sessions. To help create a fun and engaging learning environment, the bootcamp also includes an optional themed costume contest. Previous themes have included 80s attire, superheroes, and creative group costumes such as Skittles. Dressing up is completely optional, but modest prizes will be awarded for selected costume contest winners. This year’s theme will be announced in the near future.

1. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate the I-AIM model into bedside ultrasound performance and clinical decision-making.
2. Describe and discuss common foundational Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) POCUS applications, including EFAST, focused cardiac ultrasound, soft tissue ultrasound, lung ultrasound, foreign body evaluation, and ultrasound-guided vascular access.
3. Apply appropriate probe selection, machine settings, and image acquisition techniques to optimize image quality during common PEM POCUS examinations.
4. Differentiate normal and abnormal ultrasound findings in common Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) POCUS applications.
5. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate POCUS information into bedside clinical reasoning and patient care planning.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Intermountain Health, Intermountain Children’s Health, and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Intermountain Health is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
