Overview
Mindful Practice in Medicine® refers to qualities exhibited by exemplary clinicians that transcend clinical specialty and clinical experience. These qualities include: the ability to be present, attentive and curious, and to adopt a “beginners mind” with a goal of achieving greater awareness and insight into one’s own work. Mindful Practice ® programs, as developed by University of Rochester Medical School faculty, have been shown to have many benefits for participants that include improving resilience and amelioration of burnout. Beyond wellness goals for physicians, they have also been shown to improve relationships with patients and colleagues and advance quality of medical care. The intention of Mindful Practice is: 1. To foster skills of attentive observation, critical curiosity, “beginners mind” and presence; 2. To improve recognition of error-prone situations, reduce medical errors, and improve responsiveness to errors; 3. To foster caring attitudes toward patients; 4. To promote professionalism and to deal effectively with lapses in professionalism; 5. To promote clinical resilience, health and wellbeing; and 6. To help create mindful organizations that support teamwork, mindfulness and clinician health and well-being. Epstein, R., Krasner, M., Mindful Practice: Enhancing Quality of Care, Quality of Caring and Resilience, Course Curriculum University of Rochester Medical Center, 2014. Mindful Practice ® was developed by University of Rochester Medical School; use is permitted by the authors for training and teaching.

Objectives
  1. 1. Recognize clinician self-awareness and self-monitoring during clinical work and teaching.
  2. 2. Discuss clinicians’ ability to attend to patients’ needs, reduce and respond to errors, practice with greater effectiveness and compassion, and attend to their own wellbeing.
  3. 3. Incorporate a personal capacity for Mindful Practice: attentiveness, self-awareness, situational awareness, teamwork, and self-monitoring in stressful and demanding situations.
