Dr. Kia Afshar grew up in southern California and received his undergraduate degree at UCLA. He then obtained his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he graduated cum laude and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) society. Following medical school, Dr. Afshar completed his internal medicine training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he was asked to stay on for an extra year as chief resident. His passion for cardiology led him to the Cleveland Clinic for fellowship training in general cardiovascular diseases as well as an additional year in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. Dr. Afshar joined Intermountain Healthcare in 2014 after completing his training.

Dr. Afshar is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation, as well as, advanced Echocardiography. In addition to his clinic interests in taking care of patients as well as education of trainees, he continues to participate in research trials and has been involved in dozens of publications. He fundamentally believes that the struggle to become exceptional is what makes people exceptional and that lifelong learning is paramount in being a great physician. 

 

In his free time, Dr. Afshar spends as much time with his family and outdoors as possible. Being a huge fan of what Utah has to offer, he enjoys alpine skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and camping.
