Work Experience
Research Fellowship, Urology
04/2017 - 06/2018
Contact: William Lowrance ([email protected]); University of Utah Urology Division, Salt Lake City, UT
The position was funded by the University of Utah Urology Division. I spent most of my time working in Urologic Oncology; however, I have worked on projects with many sections of the department from infertility to reconstruction. I attend didactics and conferences with the residents and have clinical days with a number of the faculty. The position is ongoing, but to date I have submitted multiple IRB's and successful grants, and built four retrospective databases. I have submitted five abstracts to this year’s SUO meeting and four manuscripts for publication. I am also a primary author for a new urology textbook chapter and was an author on a recently accepted AUA update. I am a co-investigator on two ongoing clinical trials; in one I have performed an ancillary role, in the other I have been instrumental in the development and implementation of the trial. Overall, there are few aspects of research and academics that I have not had experience with during this fellowship.
Step 1 Course Instructor
03/2016 - 05/2016
Contact: Yolanda Bell ([email protected]); UTHSC, Houston, TX
One of two instructors for our school's Step 1 course working with second year medical students teaching fundamental topics and test taking strategies. We held six lectures and one test taking session discussing the ins and outs of test day.
Anatomy Pedagogue
08/2014 - 10/2014
Contact: Len Cleary ([email protected]); UTHSC, Houston, TX
Worked with the MS1 students in the anatomy lab. Primary responsibilities were to work with the students during dissections to help speed the process and to aid in identification of structures. Secondary responsibilities were to construct and to proctor the student's practical examinations at the end of each block. Additionally we would set up outside time for students to get additional tutoring on the weekends for those struggling or just wanting additional work in the anatomy lab. We also decided to host a mock practical exam the week before each of their block examinations.
Student Medical and Dental Education Program Lead Tutor/Coordinator
05/2014 - 07/2014
Contact: Andrew Harper ([email protected]); UTHSC, Houston, TX
Coordinated and managed a summer internship program for pre-medical and pre-dental college students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. I first worked before the program organizing the students supplies and housing while coordinating with professors for the student's lecture schedule. During the program I lived with the students in the Rice University dormitories. I coordinated the tutor's schedules, attended student lecture, tutored students, and worked with students on their interview skills and personal statements.
Additionally I proctored examinations and was the leader in terms of troubleshooting and discipline issues.
Supplemental Instructor with Peer Academic Services
08/2012 - 05/2013
Contact: Arthur Watson ([email protected]); Texas A&M, College Station, TX
Worked with the Biology department teaching Anatomy and Physiology. Primary responsibilities were conducting three additional lecture sessions per week open to the students. It focused on class materials and information as well as study strategies. Secondary responsibilities included an administrative role for using student feedback and facilitating information flow between Peer Academic Services and the course instructor. Additionally I would voluntarily hold review sessions the day before a test covering a practice test and "big picture" concepts.
